500 Bilibid's PDLs transferred to Sablayan Prison in Oriental Mindoro
Five hundred persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City were transferred on Monday, Nov. 24, to the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Oriental Mindoro.
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said a total of 13,781 PDLs at NBP had been transferred to various operating prison and penal farms (OPPFs) in preparation to the closure of NBP in 2028 for conversion into a government center.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said the transfer of PDLs to OPPFs “not only enhances the living conditions of PDLs but also underscores the government's commitment to reforming the penal system in the country.”
He said the new transferees were escorted by 150 personnel from the NBP who were augmented by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Muntinlupa City.
He also said that the security and logistics of the transfer were meticulously managed and the monitoring of the routes were supported by the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the Star Tollway Arterial Road (STAR) Patrol.
Meanwhile, Catapang ordered all superintendents of OPPS “to take necessary measures to protect lives and properties in their areas of jurisdiction in preparation for tropical depression ‘Verbena’.”
