It was a truly inspiring two-day Sustainability Forum hosted by the Manila Bulletin in collaboration with National University and several brand partners. With the theme “Empowering the Next Generation,” the event offered NU students meaningful insights and practical takeaways. Many left with powerful nuggets of wisdom—reminders that even simple actions can help shape a healthier, more sustainable future for both people and the planet.
If there was one message that resonated throughout the forum, it was this: Sustainability is everyone’s responsibility, and the youth are not only the hope of the future; they are already the driving force today. This is why Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan’s call for young people to stay aware, be accountable and embrace the challenge feels especially timely. From Hans “Chico” Sy’s inspiring keynote message, they were reminded to keep learning, remain focused, and volunteer for causes that serve the common good. These points, taken together, encourage students to step up and take an active role in climate action.
The two-day event brought together leaders from education, real estate, finance, healthcare, energy, telecommunications and hospitality, underscoring that sustainability is a shared duty. Each brand partner highlighted how its sector contributes to sustainable progress through collaboration rather than working in isolation.
Students were reminded that personal responsibility begins now. Every choice, mindset and habit creates an impact, and the Bank of the Philippine Islands captured this plainly: “Sustainability begins with me.” Megaworld echoed this with its message, “Green starts with me”, reinforcing the idea that collective progress starts with individual commitment.
Companies such as Ayala Land, Filinvest City, Arthaland, NEO, Torre Lorenzo Development Corporation and SteelAsia expressed a common mission anchored in energy efficiency, resource conservation, and low-carbon development. Yet they emphasized that sustainability goes beyond reducing emissions. It includes uplifting communities and ensuring that today’s developments remain beneficial for future generations. As AboitizPower noted, we must “build with purpose, and uplift communities while preserving culture.”
In sectors centered on healing and hospitality, The Medical City, SM Investments Corporation (SMIC) and SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) shared a common sustainability ethos rooted in care, community and long-term resilience. Though operating in different fields, all promote a culture of care that extends not only to people but also to the planet and the years ahead.
For technology partners such as Globe Telecom, PLDT and Smart Communications, the role extends far beyond connectivity. These companies are key players in digital inclusion, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment. Whether through digital inclusion, climate initiatives, or community-centered innovation, they work from the belief that technology should uplift lives, protect the environment, and empower communities.
As the academic partner, National University, demonstrated that when education is rooted in purpose and community relevance, it becomes a powerful tool for sustainable development. NU underscored the importance of critical thinking, values formation and lifelong learning as essential foundations of sustainability.
In the end, the forum served as a reminder that sustainability has never been a challenge for any single group or industry to solve. Lasting progress takes shape when sectors move forward together. It is the spirit of shared responsibility that gives hope for a better, more sustainable future.
