NBI arrests man for 'large-scale illegal recruitment, qualified human trafficking'
A man has been arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) for alleged large-scale illegal recruitment and qualified trafficking of six Filipinos, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Thursday, Nov. 20.
In a statement, the NBI said that the man – whose identity was withheld – was arrested last Nov. 9 in the company of six persons bound for Vietnam. All of them were arrested by the agents of the NBI’s International Airport Investigation Division (NBI-IAID).
“During departure formalities, it was discovered that their true purpose for traveling was to seek employment in Cambodia as ‘Chat Support’ or ‘Customer Service Representatives’,” it also said.
It added that investigators found that the man recruited the six Filipinos for overseas jobs and offered salaries ranging from $500 to $800 a month.
The NBI said that verification with the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed that the man “is neither licensed nor authorized to recruit workers for overseas employment.”
After his arrest, the man was charged before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office with large-scale illegal recruitment under Republic Act (RA) No. 8042, the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995 as amended, and qualified trafficking in persons committed in large scale under RA No. 9208 as amended.
