Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara on Wednesday, November 19, brushed off calls for his resignation amid allegations linking him to an alleged flood control controversy, saying the claims circulating so far are baseless and unsupported by facts.
In an ambush interview at the reopening of the PhilSports Complex in Pasig City, Angara stressed that there is “no specific accusation” against him and that the information regarding his supposed involvement appears to be purely speculative.
“Hindi siguro (Maybe not),” Angara said when asked if he intends to resign from his post over the controversy.
Earlier, several government officials — including Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Secretary Amenah Pangandaman, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, and DepEd Undersecretary Trygve Olaivar — tendered their resignation.

“Kasi hearsay lang ’yung nandoon sa akin tapos wala pang specific accusation (Because what they have is just hearsay and there’s still no specific accusation),” he added.
Angara emphasized that no document, testimony, or formal complaint has been presented linking him to any wrongdoing.
“Walang mention of any transaction, walang mention of anything (There’s no mention of any transaction, no mention of anything),” Angara said.
“Kung sa Korte iyan, ibabasura iyan (If that were in court, it would be dismissed),” he added when asked if he would consider stepping down.
In September, former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo accused Angara of receiving a supposed 12-percent cut from infrastructure projects allegedly facilitated through the DepEd chief’s representative.
Angara firmly denied the allegations, saying he has “never been involved in corruption” throughout his more than two decades in public service.

The accusations surfaced as part of a broader public discussion on accountability in government infrastructure projects.
However, as of this writing, no official investigation or charge has been announced involving Angara.
