'Tino' kills 53 in Negros Occidental

Lacson orders pre-emptive evacuation due to 'Uwan'

BACOLOD CITY – Fifty-three persons have been killed by typhoon “Tino” in Negros Occidental, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said Friday.
Twelve fatalities were recorded in Moises Padilla, followed by La Castellana with 10, eight each in Bago City and Hinigaran, four in Binalbagan, three each in San Carlos City and La Carlota City, two in Murcia, and one each in Isabela, Pontevedra, and Himamaylan City.
A total of 69,074 families or 242,809 individuals in 468 barangays in all 31 local government units were affected by the typhoon.
One-thousand, two-hundred houses were totally destroyed and 11,200 houses were partially damaged in E.B. Magalona, Sipalay City, Isabela, San Carlos City, Bago City, Toboso, San Enrique, Binalbagan, Silay, Pontevedra, and Cauayan.
The provincial government has successfully completed its two-day relief distribution in various cities and municipalities in the province.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson has ordered the pre-emptive evacuation of persons and families in high-risk areas in the province due to tropical cyclone “Uwan.”
“It is imperative to undertake proactive and preventive measures to mitigate the loss of lives and property,” Lacson said.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) is coordinating with local government units for the proper implementation and shall augment necessary resources, logistics, and personnel support to ensure the safe and orderly conduct of evacuation operations.
The LDRRMCs, in close coordination with the police, military, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and barangay officials, are enforcing evacuation directives and providing immediate assistance to affected residents.
Forced evacuation will be carried out when voluntary evacuation is refused despite imminent danger.
All LGUs have designated evacuation centers that are structurally sound and adequately equipped with food, water, medicines, power supply, and sanitation facilities.
