Returning from the capital of the Republic of Korea, I appreciated being there while the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) convened, and the high-level summits between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping took place. Here are some reflections worth sharing with my readers.

The first is on public transport in many Asian countries. I have written about this a number of times in the past. Trains and bus systems are designed to make it easy, affordable, safe and efficient for the millions who ride public transport.

The good news is that as Metro Manila’s subway, light rail systems and the North South Commuter Rail (NSCR) are being developed, Cebu and Davao Cities, with a population of about one and two million, respectively, are both on their way to growing its public transport system with a bus system already being developed. That is a goal we must all aspire to, as our cities in Mindanao grow to populations beyond a million in the next few years.

This ease of mobility through public mass transport means that vehicular traffic congestion is managed. Moreover, the lower cost of movement within and through these cities by tourists, traders, employees, and the general public allows these economic relationships to be more productive and flourish. Traffic, and high transport costs can impose limits on economic growth.

Having efficient public transport systems may inspire other positive outcomes. One is the desire to make time more efficient, to accomplish more within the given hours of the working day since the long commute will no longer be a factor in reporting for work or making the necessary business transactions or purchases. Less traffic can mean more time to do more productive things that build economic opportunity and growth. Another benefit is that we consume less imported fossil fuels and reduce our import bill. Having electric mobility can also lower the cost of transport for the riding public.

Another positive outcome of better public transport is that when less time is spent in traffic, there is more time with family, rest and exercise to tame excess stress, and build our bodies and minds. Rest recreates and revives us, to prepare for the work of the next day or the coming week. With the right amounts of rest and relaxation we renew our bodies and minds to build a productive mindset. Healthy and empowered citizens can drive even more productivity and spur more growth.

That said, the majority in this country, or the riding public can and must raise its voice in the public sphere to keep the clamor strong not only to establish better mass public transport, but keep these systems clean, affordable, well maintained,and efficient not only for today’s clientele, but for tomorrow’s users as well. As these voices are raised, I hope to see a changed attitude among service providers and regulators — where the welfare, comfort, and safety of the majority — the commuters are seen as important and worth promoting and defending.

Better public transport can help drive growth. What will matter, therefore, is how government policies and programs that promote safe, efficient, sustainable mass public transport solutions that can encourage more mobility, maximize productive time for trade, and creating economic and livelihood opportunity. This can help unleash the economic power of the people not only for the current population, but for the next generation.
