Kin of suspects in murder of cop seek fair probe

CEBU CITY – The relatives of the suspects in the killing of a police captain are calling for a fair investigation.
Leonardo Manto Jr. and Johnrey Manto were taken into custody by the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) after they surrendered days after the killing on Saturday night, Oct. 25, in Sudlon 2, a mountain barangay here.
Leonardo was tagged as the prime suspect and admitted the crime in an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
While he admitted the crime, Leonardo said he didn’t know that the persons who they engaged in an alleged shootout were policemen.
Killed in the incident was Police Capt. Joel Deiparine of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Central. Another policeman, Police Master Sgt. Archel Tero was wounded.
Leonardo surrendered to the Pasig City police and was picked up by Police Col. Enrico Figueroa, chief of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO).
First to yield was Johnrey, who turned himself over to City Councilor Dave Tumulak.
The wives of the suspects visited the CCPO on Thursday, Oct. 30.
Bing, not her real name, said she last saw her husband on Friday, Oct. 24, and was shocked to learn that he was implicated in the crime.
Bing said her husband could no longer be contacted after the incident. She denied allegations that her husband was involved in gun-for-hire activities.
“I want to ask him because it’s different if we hear it through the news only. I want to ask him what really happened,” said Bing.
Bing said she is hoping that the incident will be investigated fairly.
The wife of Johnrey, on the other hand, said she visited the CCPO to help prove that her husband was not involved in the crime.
Tessie said her husband was in Mandaue City working as a security guard when the crime happened.
Another wife went to the CCPO to check if her husband and her son were there. She said the father and son were picked up as suspects in the killing.
The wives were not able to meet their husbands.
Police Capt. Charisma Gonzales, information officer of CCPO, said the affidavits of the suspects were being processed when the relatives arrived at the police headquarters.
