P200,000 bounty for killer of Cebu City cop

CEBU CITY – A cash reward of P200,000 has been offered for the arrest of a wanted man who fatally shot a police captain in Barangay Sudlon 2 here on Saturday, Oct. 25.
The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) initially offered to give P100,000 to anyone who could provide information that would lead to the arrest of Leonardo Manto Jr.
On Monday, Oct. 27, Mayor Nestor Archival announced that the city will add P100,000 to the reward.
Police Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan, chief of PRO-7, said hot pursuit operations have been intensified to ensure the immediate arrest of the killer of Capt. Joel Deiparine of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Regional Field Unit 7.
“We will not allow this unfortunate incident to pass without justice. We will ensure that justice will be swift, deliberate, and felt by those responsible,” said Maranan.
The fatal shooting happened while Deiparine and Police Executive Master Sgt. Archel Tero were conducting a surveillance operation against Manto, who is wanted for gun charges.
The two policemen were riding a motorcycle when a Mitsubishi Strada pickup truck blocked their path.
People aboard the pickup truck fired shots at the policemen.
Deiparine sustained bullet wounds in the head and body and was declared dead in a hospital where he and Tero were taken.
The assailants used an M-16 rifle during the attack.
Flags at the PRO-7 headquarters were flown at half-mast during the Monday flag ceremony.
Archival described the incident as “deeply unfortunate.”
“It’s very unfortunate. Our police officers were performing their duties. This is one major item that made me very sad because for the last three months since I assumed, there have been no major incidents where someone died. This is the first time,” Archival said.
Archival urged the culprits to surrender.
Police records showed that Manto was arrested by the Pari-an Police Station in July 2023 for illegal possession of firearms.
