'Fake' lawyer arrested, charged for duping victim of P5-M for favorable court decision
A “fake” lawyer has been arrested in Tarlac City after duping a victim of P5 million in exchange for a favorable court decision in a land dispute, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Friday, Oct. 24.
The NBI identified the arrested person as Jenny Macanas Sapad who is also using the aliases Shiela Castillo and Angel Roxas.
It said its verification showed that the “Subject's name is not listed as a lawyer on the official websites of the Supreme Court’s Office of the Bar Confidant and the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.”
It also said its Criminal Intelligence Division (NBI-CRID) arrested Sapad based on the complaint that alleged “a certain ‘Sheila Naransa Castillo’ who represented herself as a lawyer, deceived the complainant into giving P5,000,000 in exchange for a favorable court resolution regarding a parcel of land.”
The NBI said the complainant, whose name was not disclosed, was an interested party in the land dispute and was guaranteed to be the awardee of the property.
It added that “Atty. Castillo” presented to the complainant fake receipts and documents signed by a judge and a clerk of Court of the Regional Trial Courts (RTCs) of Tarlac.
““This was done to give the impression that Subject and her cohorts had legitimate transactions with various government agencies and courts,” it added.
After her arrest, Sapad was charged with syndicated estafa through falsification of public documents in relation to Republic Act (RA) No. 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012), use of fictitious name and concealing true name, and usurpation of authority and official function under the Revised Penal Code (RPC).
