The Awit Awards will be making its way back to the tube. Not YouTube, but on ye olde TV with a twist. For the past few years, the premier Pinoy music awards show has been mostly relying on social media and the actual event to get its message across. The message being: ‘this is this year’s best Pinoy music releases, we recognize their excellence, you, the listener, should know them and support them,’ and that’s always been the credo at the core of all Awit Awards shows.
But for a long time, you had to be a music artist or working in the music industry in some shape or form to know that there is such an entity recognizing excellence in music arts in the first place.
The information is not as widespread. Not a lot of people outside of the Pinoy music sphere talk about who won ‘song of the year for 2024’ as much as say: ‘who won the Miss Universe Philippines competition the same year?’ It’s Chelsea Manalo. See what I mean? I’m no big pageant fan, but I know that Chelsea won because of how elegant she looked in her evening gown. I’m kidding! I’m sure Chelsea was fired for sure, but I know zilch about this. I’m veering away here, but my point is, if my beauty-contest clueless self can find out who won Miss Universe PH, it should be the same for Pinoy pop, right? We pride ourselves as a music-loving country, and video karaoke machines are de rigueur on social gatherings like birthday parties and whatnots, right? So we should know stuff about Song of the Year even if we’re not from the music industry.
And that’s where the PARI x MQuest-Vibe comes in. For the forthcoming 38th Awit Awards, PARI, or the Philippine Association of the Record Industry, will be teaming up with MQuest Ventures to present the long-running premier award-giving body for Pinoy music. And it’s going to be through Vibe, the music chart countdown program platform broadcast on TV5. Awit Awards and the Vibe music chart show. Makes good sense.
The partnership was announced as PARI chairman and Viva Records and Vicor Music’s Tony M. Ocampo, with PARI president Marivic Benedicto (Star Music) and officers Enzo Valdez (MCA), Alvin de Vera (Alpha), and Jesmon Chua (EMI Phils) met with MQuest chairman Manny V. Pangilinan and top brass Sienna Olaso, Peter Dizon, Rachel Relucio, and Richmond Garcia to formalize the partnership. Vibe program VJs will be hosting, and TV legend Johnny ‘Mr M’ Manahan will direct the awards show set for Nov. 16 at The Meralco Theater and televised on TV5.
PARI has done great in making the Awit Awards relevant, especially these past few years, but the Vibe partnership is the kind of thing it needs to bring OPM back into the Pinoy household. Just so that every Juan and Maria won’t just know the latest beauty pageant winner but would also be aware that music idols BINI, Sunkissed Lola, Ben&Ben, Munimuni, Lola Amor, and Zild are vying for Album of the Year. Or that bands like Over October, Lola Amour, Sugarcane, Cup of Joe, Dionela, and Jay R are all going for Song of the Year.
It starts with bringing the music back into living rooms around the country.
Oh, and 2024’s biggest song is “Raining In Manila” by Lola Amour.
