DepEd: Preventive class suspensions ensure school safety, disaster preparedness
The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday, October 13, clarified that preventive class suspensions are part of its proactive measures to safeguard students, teachers, and personnel during disaster preparedness activities and health safety initiatives.
In a public statement released by Chief Media Relations Officer Dennis E. Legaspi, DepEd said that regional and division offices are authorized to implement temporary class suspensions to conduct structural inspections and other preparedness activities.
“Ang mga preventive class suspensions o pansamantalang pagtigil ng klase ay bahagi ng mga hakbang upang matiyak ang kaligtasan ng mga mag-aaral, guro, at kawani habang isinasagawa ang mga gawain para sa kahandaan sa sakuna (Preventive class suspensions or the temporary halt of classes are part of the measures to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff while preparedness activities for disasters are being carried out),” DepEd said.
These include ensuring that school facilities can withstand earthquakes and other natural disasters, as well as promoting preventive measures against health risks.
“Isinasabay din ang mga hakbang na ito sa pag-iingat laban sa mga sakit (These measures are also carried out alongside precautions against illnesses),” DepEd added.
The agency also emphasized that alternative learning modalities remain in place during suspensions to ensure learning continuity while prioritizing safety.
“Sa panahon ng preventive suspension, ipinatutupad ang mga alternatibong paraan ng pag-aaral upang tuloy pa rin ang edukasyon habang prayoridad ang kaligtasan ng lahat (During preventive suspension periods, alternative learning modalities are implemented to ensure that education continues while prioritizing everyone’s safety),” DepEd said.
DepEd urged the cooperation of parents, teachers, and local government units in supporting these initiatives to ensure that every school remains ready and secure in the face of potential emergencies.
“Hinihikayat ng DepEd ang pakikiisa ng mga magulang, guro, at lokal na pamahalaan sa mga inisyatibang ito upang masiguro na ang bawat paaralan ay handa at ligtas sa harap ng anumang sakuna (DepEd encourages the active participation of parents, teachers, and local government units in these initiatives to ensure that every school is prepared and safe in the face of any disaster),” DepEd added.
The statement follows recent announcements of class suspensions in various areas due to health concerns and disaster preparedness drills.
