Tsunami warning: Phivolcs urges evacuation in Davao Oriental, Surigao provinces after magnitude 6.9 quake

Wave heights of over one meter may strike Pacific-facing coastal areas and could last for hours

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued a tsunami warning on Friday evening, October 10, following a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck offshore Davao Oriental at 7:12 p.m.

According to Phivolcs, the earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 36 kilometers southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Expected tsunami impact
Based on Phivolcs’ tsunami scenario database, wave heights of more than one meter above normal tides are expected along coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean.
Waves may be higher in enclosed bays and straits, posing a life-threatening risk to residents, the agency added.
“It is forecast that the first tsunami waves will arrive between 7:12 p.m. and 9:12 p.m. on October 10, 2025 (PST). These waves may continue for several hours,” Phivolcs said.
Areas under tsunami warning
Residents in coastal areas of the following provinces are strongly advised to immediately evacuate to higher ground or move farther inland: Davao Oriental, Surigao del Sur, and Surigao del Norte.
Phivolcs reiterated its advisory for people in these areas to seek higher ground without delay.
“The people in the coastal areas of the following provinces are strongly advised to immediately evacuate to higher grounds or move farther inland,” Phivolcs said. 
The agency also advised boat owners in harbors, estuaries, and shallow coastal waters in the affected provinces to secure their vessels and move away from the shore. Those already at sea are urged to remain in deep waters until further notice.
Reported and instrumental intensities
The earthquake was felt at Intensity IV in Davao City and Bislig City, Surigao del Norte.
Instrumental intensities were also recorded as follows:
Intensity IV – Magpet (Cotabato), Davao City, Digos City (Davao del Sur), Sta. Maria (Davao Occidental), Nabunturan (Davao de Oro), Gingoog City (Misamis Oriental), Malungon and Alabel (Sarangani), Tupi (South Cotabato), and Hinunangan (Southern Leyte).
