6.8-magnitude quake jolts Davao Oriental; 2nd strong tremor on Oct. 10

Another strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 jolted Davao Oriental at 7:12 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The tremor was initially reported as magnitude 6.9.
Phivolcs said this earthquake, following a magnitude 7.4 tremor earlier in the morning, may be part of a “doublet earthquake,” which means two distinct quakes occurring in almost the same area within a short period.
Both earthquakes originated from the Philippine Trench, but likely along different segments of the fault.
The epicenter of the 6.8-magnitude quake was located 43 kilometers southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at a shallow depth of 37 kilometers.
The tremor was felt at Intensity VI (very strong) in Manay, Davao Oriental; Intensity V (strong) in Baganga, Boston, Caraga, Cateel, and Tarragona, Davao Oriental; and Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Mawab, Monkayo, Nabunturan, and Pantukan, Davao de Oro; Davao City; Mati City, Davao Oriental; and Bislig City, Surigao del Sur.
Intensity III (weak) shaking was felt in Abuyog, City of Baybay, Dagami, Dulag, Javier, Julita, Leyte, Macarthur, Mahaplag, Mayorga, Palo, Santa Fe, Tabontabon, Tanauan, and Tolosa, Leyte; Tacloban City; Hinunangan, Pintuyan, San Francisco, San Juan, San Ricardo, Silago, and Sogod, Southern Leyte; Digos City and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Kidapawan City, M’lang, Makilala, and President Roxas, Cotabato; Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat; Cagdianao, Libjo, San Jose, and Tubajon, Dinagat Islands.
Meanwhile, it was felt at Intensity II (slightly felt) Borongan City, General Macarthur, and Hernani, Eastern Samar; Palapag, Northern Samar; Cagayan de Oro City; Alamada, Antipas, Banisilan, Kabacan, Magpet, and Matalam, Cotabato; Columbio, Esperanza, Isulan, Kalamansig, Lebak, Lutayan, President Quirino, Senator Ninoy Aquino, and Tacurong City, Sultan Kudarat; and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) Molave, Zamboanga del Sur; Carmen and Pigkawayan, Cotabato.
