Magat Dam releases water due to 'amihan' rains

PAGASA: Magat Dam may exceed its 'normal high water level' due to typhoon Kiko's rains

Magat Dam, located on the border of Isabela and Ifugao provinces, has released water following rising water levels caused by continuous rainfall from the northeast monsoon (amihan).

Based on the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) report, the water level at the dam was recorded at 190.94 meters as of 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 6, down from 191.62 meters at the same time on Sunday, Jan. 5.

The dam's normal high water level is 193 meters.

To manage the rising water levels, the dam has been releasing water through one of its two gates at a rate of 573.89 cubic meters per second, a decrease from the release of water through four gates at a rate of 925.89 cubic meters per second on Sunday.

PAGASA said continuous rains from the amihan have led to increased inflow into the dam, prompting the controlled release.

Local authorities are monitoring downstream areas along the Magat River, particularly the municipality of Alfonso Lista in Ifugao province, and the municipalities of Ramon, San Mateo, Aurora, Cabatuan, Luna, Reina Mercedes, Burgos, Naguilian, and Gamu in Isabela province, for potential flooding impacts.
