Rain-bearing weather systems to affect parts of the Philippines

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, Jan. 6 that four weather systems will continue to bring rain showers over several parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

The prevailing weather systems are the northeast monsoon (amihan), shear line, Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA said Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region will have cloudy skies and rains due to the amihan.

Cloudy skies with scattered rains and isolated thunderstorms may also affect Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, Quezon, and Aurora because of the shear line—a weather system that forms when cold winds from the amihan collide with warm winds from the easterlies.

The ITCZ, a system formed by the convergence of winds from the northern and southern hemispheres, may also bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms to Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Region.

In Ilocos Region and the rest of Central Luzon, PAGASA said the amihan is expected to have a minimal impact, bringing only partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains.

Meanwhile, the ITCZ will continue to bring partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over the rest of Mindanao.

The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will experience Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to localized thunderstorms.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Obet Badrina said that as of Monday there are no low-pressure areas monitored inside or near the country’s area of responsibility.
