BuCor, BJMP host ASEAN correctional conference on Feb. 14 to 17

The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) will host the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Correctional Conference (ARCC) on Feb. 14 to 17 in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

“The ARCC provides a valuable venue to address the emerging challenges of prison overcrowding and lack of resources faced by participating countries and to learn from one another while discussing efforts and solutions for the enhancement of quality correctional services," BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said.

Catapang said the conference will also be "a platform to introduce innovations and new technologies for enhancing correctional administrations."

In a statement, the BuCor said that at least 28 international organizations have been invited to take part in this conference including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, the European Union - Justice Sector Reform Program: Governance in Just (GOJUST), and the International Criminal Investigative Training Assistance Program.

It also said government and other related agencies as well as lawmakers were also invited to attend the ARCC.

ASEAN member countries are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
