Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince B. Dizon
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon on Tuesday, Sept. 30, ordered the installation of two additional temporary pumps at the Sunog Apog Pumping Station in Manila.
The station, which has remained nonfunctional since 2020, has failed to ease flooding in nearby communities.
Dizon said in a television interview that the new pumps, added to two previously installed by the former supplier, will provide immediate relief to flood-prone areas while authorities continue investigating the defective facility.
Instead of mitigating flooding, the station has worsened water accumulation and was found lacking building permits and power connections.
Despite these unresolved issues, the facility is scheduled to receive an additional P94 million for upgrades.
A P200 million proposal is also pending, and a third-party assessment will be conducted to ensure proper evaluation of the pumping station.
Dizon also instructed the DPWH–National Capital Region (DPWH-NCR) to summon the two contractors and the supplier for a formal investigation, emphasizing the department’s commitment to transparency and swift action.
Before resigning as special adviser of the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI), Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong said the commission would also probe the Sunog Apog Pumping Station, highlighting coordinated efforts to resolve the flooding issue.
