CEBU CITY – The Police Regional Office-Central Visayas (PRO-7) warned the public of dubious text messages warning individuals of existing arrest warrants against them.
The PRO-7 confirmed that a number of individuals have complained that they received text messages, reminding them to take action as arrest warrants have been issued against them.
The text messages advised the recipients to visit the Regional Intelligence Division to clear their names.
PRO-7 chief Police Brig. Gen. Redrico Maranan said the circulating text messages are a form of scam and meant to cause fear.
“These fraudulent messages are being used to sow fear and confusion within our communities. We want to assure everyone that the Police Regional Office-7 does not send text messages or communicate through unofficial means regarding pending warrants or summons,” said Maranan.
Maranan said the Regional Anti-Cyber Crime Unit has been tasked to investigate the circulating text messages and identify the individuals behind it.
“We will ensure that individuals or groups responsible for these scams will face the full force of the law,” said Maranan.
Maranan warned recepients of the text messages not to dignify it and avoid providing personal or financial information.
