NBI arrests man for offering unauthorized internet access to the public
A man has been arrested in La Union for offering to the public “unauthorized” internet access, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
In a statement, the NBI said its Cybercrime Division (NBI-CCD) arrested the man, whose identity was withheld, last Sept. 16 during the service of a warrant to search, seize, and examine computer data (WSSECD) at a three-story house in Cabaritan Sur, Naguilian, La Union.
“The operation resulted in the seizure of various computer devices used by the Subject to illegally distribute internet connections to several houses within the vicinity without authority from the internet service provider,” it said.
Charges for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, particularly, misuse of devices and system interference as well as unauthorized distribution of network services in relation to estafa under the Revised Penal Code (RPC) will be filed against the suspect, it also said.
Also, the NBI said charges for violations of RA 8484, the Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998, will also be filed against him.
The NBI said the operation stemmed from a June 4 complaint filed by an internet service provider against the internet services offered by the Facebook account “Recon Vergecon.”
“Investigation revealed that the said account offered various services, including reactivation of disconnected internet services, bandwidth enhancement for current subscribers, modem support, connection of new subscribers, and speed boosting for existing customer connections at a lower price, all without the authority of the internet service provider,” it said.
