Cebu City police on full alert for massive rally

CEBU CITY – Police here are on full alert for the massive Trillion Peso March on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Various sectors are protesting massive corruption in government’s infrastructure projects.
Police Capt. Charisma Gonzales, information officer of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), said close to 500 police personnel will be deployed and they will be supported by personnel from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, Cebu City Transportation Office, and civilian force multipliers.
The CCPO Crowd Dispersal Management Team will be on standby, Gonzales said.
Gonzales said deployment will start as early as 6 a.m.
All city police stations are on heightened alert, Gonzales said.
Sectoral groups will hold a caravan before gathering at the Fuente Osmeña Circle. Some groups will stage their protest at the Plaza Independencia.
Catholic schools in Cebu are joining the nationwide protest. Saint Theresa’s College (STC), the University of San Carlos (USC), and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) have issued advisories encouraging their students and communities to participate in prayer rallies.
The STC will hold a prayer rally at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. A procession will proceed to Plaza Independencia, where a Mass is scheduled at 5:30 p.m.
“The past teaches us not to forget. The present calls us to act with courage. The future depends on what we do today,” the school said.
USC asked its students to wear white on Monday, Sept. 22, as a show of solidarity with the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) and other organizations demanding accountability over corruption issues.
USJ-R also asked its students to wear white on Monday to show support for the CEAP-led movement. “Let’s paint the campus white and show our support,” the university said.
