CEBU CITY – A coalition of various groups will hold another round of indignation rally here in time for the 53rd anniversary of the declaration of martial law on Sunday, Sept. 21.
The Panaghiusa sa Yanong Sugbuanon Batok Korapsyon (Payong) said the rally that will be held at Fuente Circle will be attended by 3,000 to 5,000 people. The rally will start at 3 p.m.
Payong is the same group that staged a rally last Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Plaza Independencia where more than 500 people gathered.
Just like the previous rally, the group will demand accountability amid what they described as rampant corruption in infrastructure projects.
Edward Ligas, one of the convenors of Payong, said the group will continue to hold similar activities until those involved in anomalies are prosecuted and jailed.
Ligas said Payong is a convergence of grassroots organizations, youth groups, the religious sector, business leaders, professionals, workers, and advocates of justice and good governance that was formed to strongly condemn the misuse, overpricing, substandard implementation, and collusion between contractors, Department of Public Works and Highways officials, and politicians.
“They have betrayed the public’s trust,” said Ligas.
Before the indignation rally, several groups will also separate activities.
Bayan Central Visayas Chairperson Jaime Paglinawan said that before the rally, their group will march from Fuente Osmeña to Colon starting at 8 a.m.
Dennis Derige, spokesperson of the Partidong Manggagawa (PM)-Cebu, said that their group will also stage a protest at the Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) before joining the indignation rally in Osmeña Circle.
Derige said they are also coordinating with the religious group to join their activity.
Meanwhile, Ligas welcomed the creation of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
Ligas said that they will file a complaint before the ICI against contractors in Cebu allegedly involved in ghost or substandard flood control projects.
He said that Sen. Raffy Tulfo has contacted him and asked for a soft-copy of documents pertaining to flood control projects in Cebu.
Ligas has previously filed letter-complaints, asking the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee to also investigate the flood control projects in Cebu.
