Palace: Marcos' anti-corruption drive not about legacy
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. (Mark Balmores)
President Marcos’ intensified anti-corruption campaign is not being pursued to cement his political legacy but to address systemic anomalies in government projects, Malacañang said.
Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said this amid ongoing investigations and demonstrations prompted by anomalous flood control projects.
In her press briefing on Wednesday, Sept. 17, the Palace Press Officer said the President was exposing irregularities in flood control and infrastructure projects because it was the right thing to do.
“Ginagawa niya po ito dahil ito po ang kinakailangan (He is doing this because this is what is needed),” she said.
“Ginagawa niya po ito para sa taong bayan. So hindi para po magkaroon lamang ng legacy (He’s doing this for the people, not for some legacy),” she added.
Castro said Marcos’ directive to form the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) and scrutinize questionable flood control projects reflects a commitment to accountability in government.
She noted that the scope of the anti-corruption campaign will not be limited to the DPWH.
“Kung meron po makikita at maibibigay na anumang mga reports tungkol sa anumang korapsyon, 'yan naman po ay talagang pa-iimbestigahan (If there will be reports of any corruption, that will be investigated)” she said.
‘Romualdez won’t be spared’
Meanwhile, Castro said embattled House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez stepping down will not shield him from investigations, especially since he is being mentioned in connection with alleged flood control anomalies.
“Mag-resign, hindi siya mag-resign, maaari pa rin siya maimbestigahan (Whether he resigns or not, he could still be investigated),” she said.
She explained that a resignation could allow a freer investigation, but accountability remains.
“Kung masasangkot man ang kanyang pangalan at may mapapakitang ebidensya laban sa kanya, mas maganda ito ay kanyang depensahan sa pamamagitan ng mga records na maaari niyang ipakita (If he is implicated and there is evidence against him, it’s better if he defends himself with records that he could show),” Castro said.
