PAGASA said Tropical Depression Mirasol maintains strength over Ilocos Norte, may intensify into a tropical storm with Signal No. 2 warnings in Northern Luzon. (PAGASA)
Tropical Depression Mirasol continues to maintain its strength as it moves over the coastal waters of Ilocos Norte, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported Wednesday night, September 17.
In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Mirasol was estimated to be centered over the coastal waters of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, approximately 60 kilometers north-northeast of Laoag City.
The system is moving north-northwestward at 10 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 75 km/h, PAGASA added.
The weather bureau noted that the disturbance is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm within the next 12 hours, with the possible hoisting of Wind Signal No. 2 over parts of Northern Luzon.
Heavy rainfall, severe wind hazards
PAGASA advised the public to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to affect several areas. Local winds may intensify in coastal and upland regions, while areas sheltered from prevailing winds are likely to experience lighter effects.
Minimal to minor impacts from strong winds are possible in areas under Tropical Wind Cyclone Signal (TWCS) No. 1, including Batanes; Cagayan, including the Babuyan Islands; the northern portion of Isabela (Santo Tomas, Santa Maria, Quezon, Roxas, Delfin Albano, San Pablo, Tumauini, Cabagan, Quirino, Mallig, Maconacon, San Mateo, Aurora, Cabatuan, San Manuel, Burgos, Gamu, Reina Mercedes, Luna, Ilagan City, Divilacan); Apayao; Abra; Kalinga; Mountain Province; the eastern and northern portions of Ifugao (Mayoyao, Hungduan, Aguinaldo, Banaue, Alfonso Lista, Hingyon); Ilocos Norte; and the northern and central portions of Ilocos Sur (Sinait, Cabugao, San Juan, Magsingal, Santo Domingo, Bantay, San Vicente, San Ildefonso, Santa Catalina, City of Vigan, Caoayan, Santa, Cervantes, Quirino, San Emilio, Gregorio del Pilar, San Esteban, Banayoyo, Burgos, City of Candon, Santa Lucia, Santiago, Lidlidda, Nagbukel, Suyo, Sigay, Galimuyod, Santa Cruz, Santa Maria, Narvacan, Salcedo).
PAGASA also noted that the southwest monsoon (habagat) will bring strong to gale-force gusts in several Luzon areas.
“Mirasol” is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, September 18.
PAGASA said the system is likely to remain a tropical storm throughout the forecast period, with the possibility of intensifying into a severe tropical storm before exiting the PAR.
