SOJ Remulla: 'Criminal raps against me part of efforts to derail my application as next Ombudsman'
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said the criminal complaints filed against him before the Office of the Ombudsman (OMB) on Monday, Sept. 15, are part of the efforts to derail his application as next Ombudsman.
“It’s really an organized effort for them to shoot down my candidacy as Ombudsman,” said Remulla during a briefing at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
On Monday, Davao City Mayor Sebastian Z. Duterte filed before the OMB in Mindanao criminal complaints against Remulla and his co-respondents in connection with the March 11 arrest of former president Rodrigo R. Duterte.
The complaints were filed after the OMB issued a recent resolution that dismissed the complaint of Sen. Imee Marcos against Remulla and his co-accused in the Duterte arrest. Senator Marcos has filed her motion to reconsider the dismissal.
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has required candidates for the position of Ombudsman to submit a clearance issued by the OMB that shows they have no pending criminal cases.
Remulla recalled that, following the arrest of then president Duterte, Sebastian and his siblings filed separate petitions before the Supreme Court (SC) questioning the arrest of their father.
“So, it’s really forum shopping and it’s actually meant to shoot down my aspiration to be the Ombudsman of this country,” Remulla lamented.
Despite the filing of new complaints, Remulla expressed optimism and said: “I think we can still prevail.”
He also said: “I think the truth is on my side. Just let it be. I will roll with the punches,” he stated.
He added that he believes “the JBC will still see through this kind of acts being perpetrated by the opposite political camp.”
