MOVIEGOER: Nora monument rising soon in Iriga PNR station
National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Nora Aunor
A life-size statue, a bust, and a depiction of a child vendor are the three main components of a grand monument honoring superstar and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Nora Aunor.
The cultural landmark will soon rise in the vicinity of the very same train station on Felix Monte Street in Iriga City where the young Nora peddled water and boiled peanuts in the early 1960s.
Iriga City Mayor Wilfredo Rex Oliva said the edifice is “more than a statue,” rather, an invitation to rediscover Iriga’s history as it looks forward to a brighter future. Philippine National Railways (PNR) officials also expressed support, saying the monument pays tribute to Aunor’s journey from humble beginnings while boosting tourism.
The actress’ family, through her son Ian Kristoffer de Leon, welcomed the project with gratitude. The actor recently visited his mother’s hometown and paid a courtesy call on local government officials. He is expected to grace the ground breaking of the project in early September.
In celebration of one of Iriga’s own, the city also celebrates the annual Nora Aunor Day every May 21, the superstar’s birth anniversary. A section of Iriga City Public Library is devoted to Noraniana, featuring artifacts---books, pictures, records--- celebrating Nora’s career as an actress and singer for more than 50 years starting from 1967 when she won as grand champion of ABS-CBN’s nationwide talent search, Tawag ng Tanghalan.
There are also efforts to put up a Nora Aunor Museum in the city being spearheaded by civic leaders and loyal fans of the fallen superstar. In the sand dunes of Laoag, there erects a statue of a praying Nora Aunor inspired by her faith healer Elsa character in the classic and internationally awarded film, Himala, directed by Ishmael Bernal. A tribute book honoring the superstar’s life and work is being prepared by Vibal Publishing. There’s no stopping the outpouring of events celebrating the superstar, making her larger than life even in death.
Nora passed on April 16, 2025 due to complications brought about by acute respiratory illness. Her legacy lives on in the huge contribution her extensive body of work has impacted on Filipino culture and arts.
