BI bars suspected human trafficking victims from leaving PH
A husband and his wife were barred from leaving the country on suspicion that they were victims of human trafficking.
The spouses, whose names were not disclosed, were intercepted by immigration officers last Sept. 1 at the Iloilo International Airport before they could board their flight to Thailand.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado said the couple claimed to be tourists but primary inspection officers raised concerns over their questionable return ticket and referred them for secondary inspection.
During secondary inspection, Viado said the couple admitted to paying P37,000 to a recruiter they met on social media for travel and recruitment fees.
He also said that the spouses were promised assistant positions in an undisclosed company with job details to be revealed only upon arrival.
“According to them, they saw this opportunity as a way to support and raise their children well,” he added.
In preventing their departure, Viado said immigration officers suspected that the couple would be forced to work in scam hubs once they arrived at their destination.
The spouses have been turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) for further investigation and filing of charges against their recruiter if evidence warrants.
