Palace: Marcos has no comment yet on proposal to cut age requirement for president, VP, senators
PCO Undersecretary Claire Castro
Malacañang refused to give a comment on the new proposal that seeks to cut the age requirement for president, vice president, and senators, saying President Marcos needs to see the whole proposal first.
Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said they cannot say for now whether the President is in favor of the proposal or not.
"Kung anuman po ang kanilang ninanais na gawing batas, mas mainam po talaga kung anuman po ang detalye ay maipakita sa Pangulo bago po magkaroon ng reaksyon (Whatever law they wish to propose, it would really be better if the details are presented to the President first before any reaction is made)," Castro said in a Palace briefing on Thursday, Sept. 4.
"Hindi po natin masasabi kung ito’y positibo o negatibo hangga’t hindi po nakikita ng Pangulo kung anuman iyong detalye dito (We cannot say whether it’s positive or negative until the President sees the details)," Castro added.
Asked to comment on the method used to push for the measure, Castro said it's the lawmakers job after all.
"Trabaho naman po nila iyan, tingnan po natin … muli, tingnan natin kung ano po ang magiging detalye nito para sang-ayunan ito o hindi sang-ayunan ng Pangulo (That is their job, after all. Let’s see — again, let’s see what the details will be so that the President can decide whether to approve or disapprove it),” Castro said.
A bloc of reform-minded lawmakers filed on Wednesday a resolution of both Houses calling for a constitutional convention (Con-Con) that would lower the minimum age requirement for the President and Vice President from 40 to 35, and senators from 35 to 30.
