The cast of ' Northern Exposure' (Images from Facebook)
Those who grew up in the 90s would probably know of ‘Northern Exposure,’ the hit American TV series export that the ABS-CBN network aired late Friday evenings. The show mainly featured an ensemble cast, but at its center are Rob Morrow and Janine Turner as Doctor Joel Fleischman and airplane pilot Maggie O’Connell, whose hate-love, cat & dog relationship entertained and injected just the right amount of ‘kilig’ every time they would almost have a moment on the show. I remember religiously watching the show every week and have even given up numerous Friday ‘gimik’ nights just not to miss an episode. The show was humorous, philosophical, surreal, whimsical, eccentric, intelligent, poetic, quirky, thought-provoking, nostalgic, and so much more. And I definitely had my favorite characters such as DJ-philosopher Chris Stevens (played by a young not-yet famous John Corbett), innocently cool Ed Chigliak (Darren E. Burrows), Barry Corbin (as Maurice Minnifield), John Cullum (bar owner and honorary mayor Holling Vincoeur) Cynthia Geary (Holling’s young wife Shelly Tambo) Elaine Miles (as doctor’s assistant Marilyn Whirlwind) to name some of the characters that usually populated the show.
As with all good things in this world, the show ended after its fifth season. If I remember correctly, the show quit airing on ABS-CBN even much earlier than that. So I never really found out what happened to everyone. Like when you stopped reading a book and all the characters just froze in mid-action, only to move again when you opened the page. In my mind, it was left hanging in the air.
It was last year that I started looking for the complete series on the internet, so I could finally finish this one. I was able to download the whole series courtesy of the internet. But binge-watching the whole thing was another story. I found it tedious to open a laptop and watch a nearly scratchy, low-quality-looking MP4 file copy.
Rob Morrow and Janine Turner
But just a few months ago, the podcast "Northern Disclosure” appeared on my feed, and lo and behold, Rob Morrow and Janine Turner are back to discussing all things related to the town of fictional Cicely, Alaska, and its inhabitants. According to the description, this is “the Northern Exposure rewatch podcast you didn’t know you needed: co-stars Morrow and Turner return, revisiting all 110 episodes of the Emmy-winning, Golden Globe-nominated ’90s series.” And just like that, the actors who played the show’s beloved characters have returned “to share never-before-heard behind-the-scenes stories that made this show a classic.”
Just in time, too, as my buddy Rommel included me in his Amazon Video family subscription, where the entire “Northern Exposure” series can be rewatched in hi-def quality. So listening to the podcast with “O’Connell and Fleischman” (or is it better the other way around) discuss each episode (their podcast is both on Spotify and YouTube) and watching it the show again after all these years is like having the ’90s waving back again at me (and the show’s whole fandom) with fond remembrance. Back to a “benevolent universe” as Turner and Morrow describe it.
Did I also mention that the show is also humanistic, introspective, wistful, subtle, artistic, offbeat, dreamlike, and charming?
Talk no further, they had me sold the moment they started the podcast. North to the future indeed.
