Police General Nicolas Torre III on Friday, Aug. 29, asked the public, particularly his supporters, not to feel sorry for him even after he was abruptly removed by President Marcos Jr. as the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
In a video posted on his Facebook page, Torre thanked those who expressed support for him, but added that the pity should be on ordinary Filipinos who repeatedly have to endure flooding woes during the rainy season, passing a veiled remark on the corruption involved in alleged anomalous flood control projects hounding the government.
“Salamat din sa mga naawa sa akin ngunit hinihiling ko sa inyo, huwag niyo akong kaawaan. In spite of my abrupt removal as Chief of the Philippine National Police, okay po ako (Thank you as well to those who felt pity for me, but I ask you, please don’t feel sorry for me. In spite of my abrupt removal as Chief of the Philippine National Police, I am okay),” he said.
“Kung meron mang tayong dapat kaawaan, yun ay ang milyung-milyon nating mga kababayan na paulit-ulit na nagiging biktima ng palagiang pagbaha. Sila ang tunay na nangangailangan ng tulong at kalinga sa panahon nagayon sapagkat hindi naman sila dapat ang laging nagdudusa at naghihirap tuwing tag-ulan (If there are people we should feel sorry for, it is the millions of our fellow Filipinos who repeatedly fall victim to constant flooding. They are the ones who truly need help and compassion at this time, because they should not be the ones who always suffer and endure hardship every rainy season),” added Torre, who, before being relieved as the country's top cop, organized a boxing charity match last month that generated P16.3 million for the benefit of flood victims even if his opponent, Davao City Acting Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte, was a no-show.
Torre also reiterated that he has no bad blood with Marcos, saying he understands that the President has to make difficult decisions as the Chief Executive.
“At ang pagkaalis ko bilang Chief of the Philippine National Police ay isa lamang sa mga ito (And my removal as Chief of the Philippine National Police is just one of these [decisions],” he said.
“Pulis pa rin naman ako at (I am still a police officer and) I serve, and I still continue to serve at the pleasure of the President and our country,” the general added.
Torre issued the statement on the same day that Police Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. made his first command conference as acting PNP chief at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

PNP spokesperson Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño clarified that Torre will be assigned to the Directorate for Personnel and Records Management’s Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit (DPRM-PHAU), contrary to the former's earlier remark that the latter would be posted at the Office of the Chief PNP.
Torre is on leave from Aug. 28 to Sept. 29.
