2 persons convicted of kidnapping for ransom of businessman – NBI
Two persons have been convicted by Lipa City regional trial court (RTC) of kidnapping for ransom of a businessman in 2015, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
In a statement, the NBI said those convicted were Francisco B. Quaimco and Rammel E. Relos who were sentenced to reclusion perpetua, a jail term ranging from 20 to 40 years in jail.
The NBI did not furnish journalists a copy of the RTC decision.
It said that Quiamco and Relos were arrested during an entrapment operation conducted by the NBI National Capital Region (NBI-NCR) on July 30, 2015 in Mangatarem, Pangasinan.
During the operation, rescued was businessman Teodico Ozaeta who got abducted on July 24, 2015 after leaving a supermarket in Lipa City.
The NBI started its investigation on the complaint filed by Ozaeta’s relatives.
It said the businessman’s abductors demanded P30 million in ransom money.
The ransom demand prompted the NBI to conduct surveillance by closely monitoring the communications between the kidnappers and the members of the family.
It said the monitoring and surveillance allowed the NBI operatives to pinpoint the location of the abductors in Mangatarem, Pangasinan. Thereafter, the entrapment operation was conducted, it also said.
