Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said this after transport groups filed petitions before the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) for the P1 fare hike, citing the impact of high pump prices on operations.
In her press briefing, the Palace Press Officer said the President wants a careful balance between easing the burden on commuters and addressing the concerns of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers and operators.
“Ang direktiba po ng Pangulo, ito po ay aaralin dahil marami pong maaapektuhan dito (The President ordered a study because many will be affected by it),” he said.
According to Castro, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) will not decide on the petition alone, as the matter will undergo deliberations with the government’s economic managers.
This includes consultations and public hearings to ensure all sectors are heard.
“Magkakaroon po ito ng mga consultation at public hearings para po maging mas balanse for both or among the parties (There will be a consultation and public hearings to be fair for all parties),” Castro said.
“Kasama na yung PUV operators, drivers, pati na rin po ang commuters (This will include PUV operators, drivers, and even commuters),” she added.
Asked about possible government measures to offset operating costs in the absence of fuel subsidies, Castro said the matter would be referred to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon.
“Para mas detalyado po kung ano pa ang maaari nating maibigay sa ating PUV drivers and operators (So we will have a detailed explanation as to what assistance we can give the PUV drivers and operators),” she said.
