Councilor Dave Tumulak said preparations have to be taken early to ensure the smooth conduct of Cebu’s biggest tourism and religious event held every third Sunday of January.
“The Sinulog is not just for us here in Cebu. It’s for the many who visit and take part in our tradition. That’s why we’re starting this early,” Tumulak told MyTVCebu.
As the majority floor leader and chairman of the disaster response committee of the City Council, Tumulak filed 10 resolutions to kick off coordination across government departments, national agencies, and private stakeholders.
Tumulak said that extensive coordination is needed to avoid logistical issues that marred past celebrations.
The resolutions filed by Tumulak have been approved by the council.
Road closures will be enforced from Jan. 5 to 18 in major downtown streets such as Osmeña Boulevard, D. Jakosalem St., and Magallanes St..
A 100-meter no-parking zone around the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, where a series of Masses will be held leading to the Sinulog, will be implemented.
To help manage the crowds during the grand parade, the Cebu South Bus Terminal will temporarily cease operations on Jan. 18, with buses rerouted to South Road Properties (SRP) starting at 3 a.m. on Jan. 19.
Just like in previous Sinulogs, a no-fly zone on Jan. 17 and 18 was proposed.
The Department of Public Works and Highways was asked to inspect and conduct immediate road repairs if needed.
