CEBU CITY – Despite uncertainties surrounding this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE), the 10-day special registration period in Central Visayas pushed through starting Thursday, July 31.
Commission on Elections-Central Visayas (Comelec-7) Regional Director Francisco Pobe said that as of 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 5,688 voter registration applications were processed in the region.
There were 2,773 male and 2,915 female applicants. Cebu accounted for most of the applications with 5,483.
Pobe said the special registration will be conducted until Aug. 10 in local Comelec offices, mall sites, and mobile centers across the region.
The special registration drive kicked off amid reports that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to sign into law a measure postponing the Dec. 1 BSKE.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said they have been informed by the Office of the Executive Secretary that a formal signing ceremony for the BSKE postponement bill would be held on August 12 at 2 p.m. in Malacanang.
If signed, the law will officially move the Dec. 1 elections to November 2026.
