Part of Sablayan Prison in Occidental Mindoro eyed as ecozone
Part of the 8,327-hectare Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm (SPPF) in Occidental Mindoro is being eyed as an economic zone, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.
In a statement, BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said that SPPF has significant potential as a strategic cruise ship access route connecting to some of the most stunning tourist destinations in the Philippines, including Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, and Antique.
Catapang said the SPPF, as an economic zone, could serve as a vital hub for tourists eager to explore renowned sites such as Coron, El Nido, Puerto Princesa, Amanpulo, and Cuyo -- all accessible through Sablayan town's waterways.
He said he has met with Sablayan Mayor Walter Marquez to discuss the economic zone project.
The BuCor said that the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) has approved this year the creation of the Palawan Mega Ecozone inside the reservation of the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF).
Catapang pointed out “the success of Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm serves as a blueprint for what Bucor and Sablayan can achieve together.”
If SPPF can replicate the IPPF model, Sablayan could transform the way communities and correctional facilities interact and, thus, lead to a more productive and socially responsible approach to rehabilitation and community development, he said.
He added that IPPF has been recognized for its efforts in eco-tourism and sustainable agriculture and has shown how correctional facilities can contribute positively to their surrounding environments.
