CEBU CITY – A truck helper was pinned to death by a backhoe in a freak accident in Barangay Sapangdaku here on Friday, July 26.
Police identified the victim as Mark Vincent Latayad, a resident of City of Naga, Cebu province.
Investigation by the Enforcement Unit of the Cebu City Police Office showed that the victim was one of the three workers of Quirante Construction Corp. who helped load a backhoe into a 10-wheel truck to be brought to Barangay Pamutan, a mountain barangay here.
The backhoe was securely tied by the three workers with chains.
As the truck driven by Gilberto Flores, 45, was travelling, the chain snapped, causing the backhoe to tilt.
As the backhoe’s weight favored one side, the truck also tilted. The truck eventually fell on its side, causing the backhoe to fall.
The three workers jumped as the backhoe was about to fall. However, Latayad jumped on the left of the road where the backhoe fell and crushed him to death.
The victim was taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City where he was declared dead.
The two other workers, Kiven Navales and Glenn Formentera, were unhurt.
The driver of the truck was taken into police custody after the incident.
