Cebu was chosen as the pilot area for the implementation of the program in the Visayas.
Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon led the launching and inspected the route where public utility vehicles offering free rides will pass.
To better serve commuters, Dizon said the program will operate during peak hours, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The program will be in effect even on weekends and holidays. The program covers ‘01K’ jeepneys plying the Parkmall, Mandaue City-Urgello, Cebu City route, which was chosen as it primarily serves university students and employees, making it one of the busiest and most essential transport lines in Cebu.
Dizon said that the free ride is open to all, not just students or employees.
“Tulong ito ng ating president to the people of Cebu and we will just keep on expanding this as much as we can,” Dizon said.
Under the program, participating operators will receive financial assistance from the government. A total of 115 modern jeepney units are being mobilized on the 01K route, with the DOTr allocating P350,000 daily to cover operational expenses.
The department has earmarked an annual budget between P150 million and P160 million for this route. It remains unknown yet when the program will end, said Dizon.
