DOJ urged to probe PNP members on 'disappearance, killings of activists'
A human rights group asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Philippine National Police (PNP) members who were allegedly involved in the disappearance and extrajudicial killings of activists.
Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay made the call after Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin C. Remulla said that policemen involved in the missing “sabungeros” case may have also participated in the extrajudicial killings that took place during the previous administration’s illegal drugs war.
In a statement, Palabay said “these may be the same people involved in the enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings of activists.”
Karapatan’s website says it is “a national alliance of human rights organizations and individuals working for the promotion and protection of human rights in the Philippines.”
Palabay said there have been 20 activists who went missing under the administration of former president Rodrigo R. Duterte and another 15 during the watch of President Marcos.
She noted that accused and whistleblower Julie “Dondon” Patindongan had revealed that the “sabungeros” who went missing were killed due to allegations of cheating in online cockfighting or e-sabong.
She accused Duterte, despite claiming to hate gambling, as the one who legalized e-sabong in 2020 and eventually became a state-enabled enterprise that spanned 14 regions and netted the government about P640 million per month.
She alleged that a significant portion of these revenues went to the “presidential social fund” which she described as a pork barrel item that Duterte spent on his “priority projects.”
