Marikina LGU opens evacuation centers, prepares for 'Crising'
The local government of Marikina on Saturday, July 19, prepared for the expected impact of Severe Tropical Storm (STS) "Crising" by implementing advanced prepositioning measures to ensure the safety of Marikeños.
Marikina Mayor Marjorie Ann “Maan” Teodoro, together with 1st District Rep. Marcelino “Marcy” Teodoro, personally monitored the Marikina River’s water level in Barangay Sto. Niño.
As of 11:35 a.m., the river’s water level was at 14.3 meters, which is still within the normal range. The first alarm will be raised once the level reaches 15 meters.
According to the city’s early warning system, the second alarm will be raised if the water level reaches 16 meters. At this point, residents in low-lying areas, especially those near the river, will be advised to voluntarily proceed to designated evacuation sites.
If the water level reaches 18 meters, the city government will raise the third alarm and implement forced evacuations in all affected areas.
On the other hand, despite the rising water level, Teodoro said the city is already seeing the positive effects of the river’s slope protection and dredging efforts, as water from the mountains now flows more quickly even during heavy rainfall.
“Nakikita na natin 'yung bunga ng slope protection, pag de-dredge ng ating ilog, pagpapalapad ng ating ilog, mabilis na umaagos ang tubig galing sa bundok kahit na gaano kalakas ang pag-ulan (We are now seeing the results of the slope protection, the dredging and widening of our river. Water coming from the mountains now flows faster, even during heavy rainfall),” the mayor said.
She also said that evacuation centers in the city are now open, with modular tents already set up for evacuees. The local government has also deployed rescue boats in strategic and low-lying areas.
The Marikina City Rescue 161 added that roving operations by the Tree Cutting Team are ongoing to remove branches that may obstruct or damage power lines.
The city is also continuously monitoring the Marikina River’s water level and the latest weather conditions. The Marikina Command Center remains on alert and actively responds through its emergency hotlines.
Meanwhile, clearing and cleaning operations are being carried out in waterways to prevent the clogging of drainage inlets.
Local officials are also on the ground, monitoring densely populated areas, especially marginalized communities, as well as the condition of roads to ensure everyone’s safety during the storm.
