MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – All 19 municipalities and one component city of La Union and 47 out of 48 local governments of Pangasinan suspended classes on Friday due to inclement weather caused by tropical storm ‘’Crising.’’
La Union and the northern portion of Pangasinan are under tropical cyclone wind signal No. 1 as of 8 a.m.
La Union is under red alert while Pangasinan is under blue alert, according to the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) 1 (Ilocos).
"The raising of alert status is based on the discretion of the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council, depending on their assessment of the current situation on the ground or their respective jurisdiction and available data from various concerned government agencies," OCD-1 information officer Adrian Pagsolingan said in a phone interview.
Red alert means heightened monitoring and coordination and all standby assets are most likely to be deployed, while blue alert is raised if the situation is manageable and resources are on standby, he explained.
Both provinces conducted the pre-disaster risk assessment meeting on Thursday to discuss the preparations for disaster preparedness.
"All preparations are now in place. Rest assured that our province is ready for the possible effects of this tropical storm," La Union Gov. Mario Eduardo Ortega said in a statement.
Ortega directed local government units to implement all necessary preparedness measures, prepare the needed resources, and activate their Incident Command Centers in case of immediate rescue response or possible evacuation of residents.
"Always be prepared, don't be complacent and pack your go-bags with your necessities. Have enough food for three days so that in case you get isolated, you'll have something to eat," he said.
La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said all rescue vehicles and assets are on standby for mobilization, including an ambulance, three high-lift off-road vehicles, a utility vehicle, a transport vehicle, a boom truck, a rescue truck, a jetski, and three rubber boats.
Four teams, with four members each, are ready to be deployed to critical areas across the province, while 819 evacuation centers equipped with essential supplies are ready to accommodate residents who may be affected by the storm.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development readied 86,874 family food packs and 15,463 non-food items stored in 21 warehouses across the region for families to be affected by the onslaught of Crising.
The State weather bureau said Crising has maintained its strength as it moves towards mainland Cagayan-Babuyan Islands. Its center was estimated at about 250 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. (PNA)
