Cebu City under state of calamity

CEBU CITY – A state of calamity has been declared here following heavy rains that caused flooding and landslides.

The Cebu City Council, in an emergency session on Friday, July 18, approved the recommendation of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council to place the city under a state of calamity.
Mayor Nestor Archival Sr. said placing the city under a state of calamity will help flood mitigation efforts such as repair, desilting, and declogging of waterways in critical areas.
“This declaration is not just a response to recent flooding but part of our proactive preparations from now until December, as we anticipate more weather disturbances in the coming months,” said Archival.
With the inclement weather, Archival recommended that the City Command Center be manned 24/7 to ensure swift emergency response.
The DRRMC disclosed that the city still has P61 million in quick response funds which will be used to support emergency operations.
The southwest monsoon or ‘’habagat,’’ intensified by tropical storm ‘’Crising,’’ caused heavy rains here.
Waist-deep floods in low-lying barangays and landslides have been reported across the city.
“We should prepare now. We could still face eight to 10 typhoons from now until December. We don’t have enough equipment. That’s why we’re declaring a state of calamity,” Archival said.
Councilor Dave Tumulak, head of the disaster council, said the city has activated its Incident Command System, which will work closely with barangays.
The city experienced heavy rains last Tuesday, causing heavy flooding in some areas. No casualties were reported.
“That’s something to be thankful for,” Tumulak said. “We are addressing the gaps and reinforcing communication systems, especially in mountain barangays.”
Because of the bad weather, classes were suspended. Archival said classes will resume if the weather improves on Monday, July 21.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Services, 62 families or 263 individuals from Barangay Cogon Pardo were affected by floods.
