Advanced passenger info system paves way for arrest of Chinese national with Interpol alert notice
The use of the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) paved the way for the arrest of a Chinese national who is on alert notice issued by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado said that arrested last July 16 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) was Chiang Yiu Wai, 62, a Hong Kong resident and a suspected illegal drugs supplier.
“The early detection of this individual demonstrates the strength of our APIS system and the importance of strong inter-agency and international cooperation,” Viado said.
He said that Chiang has been ordered to depart immediately to the foreigner’s country of origin and will be placed in the BI’s blacklist to prevent his reentry to the Philippines.
The APIS tracks and assesses passenger data in real time.
With its APIS, the Philippines can now receive information on terrorists and criminals before they arrive in the country.
It enables authorities to assess passenger information in real-time, thus helping prevent the movement of high-risk individuals and strengthening a country’s defenses against terrorism and transnational crime, the BI said.
