After almost two months, a 68-year-old midwife linked to the fatal circumcision of a 10-year-old boy in Tondo, Manila, was arrested on Thursday, July 10.
The Manila Police District (MPD) identified the suspect as “Teresita,” a resident of Balut, Tondo. She was also listed as the No. 5 most wanted person at the station level.
Teresita was arrested by virtue of a warrant for Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide (Article 365 of the Revised Penal Code) and Illegal Practice of Medicine (Republic Act No. 2382, The Medical Act of 1959). The warrant was issued by Judge Joel A. Lucasan, presiding judge of the Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 27 in Manila, on June 30.
According to MPD Station 1 Commander Col. Ronald De Leon, the suspect performed the circumcision on the victim at a lying-in clinic in Balut, Tondo on May 17, which resulted in the boy’s death due to possible complications from improperly administered anesthesia.
During the procedure, the suspect allegedly administered 20cc of anesthesia. Shortly after, the boy reportedly began convulsing and became unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Based on official autopsy results, MPD said the cause of death was subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding in parts of the victim's head.
De Leon added that while the suspect is a licensed midwife, she previously faced a medical malpractice complaint for posing as a doctor and treating patients who later found out she was not licensed as one.
The suspect is currently detained at the female custodial facility of MPD Police Station 1.
