Anesthesia misuse led to boy's death in Tondo — MPD

The Manila Police District (MPD) said that the death of a 10-year-old boy following a circumcision procedure in Tondo, Manila, was possibly due to complications from improperly administered anesthesia.

Based on the official autopsy results, MPD said the cause of death was subarachnoid hemorrhage or bleeding in parts of the victim's head.

The victim was reportedly brought to a lying-in clinic in Balut, Tondo, on May 17 for a routine circumcision.

During the procedure, he was given 20cc of anesthesia by an individual later found to be posing as a licensed medical practitioner.

Shortly after receiving the anesthesia, the boy reportedly began convulsing and became unresponsive. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The MPD confirmed that the clinic was operating without proper accreditation and that the person who conducted the procedure lacked the necessary medical license.

Investigators have categorized the case as reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and are considering additional charges for illegal medical practice.

The boy's family stated that he was in good health before the procedure and is calling for the full prosecution of those involved.

The Department of Health also advised the public the importance of seeking medical care only from certified professionals and licensed facilities.

MPD said the mother of the victim has already signed a complaint affidavit against the unlicensed doctor.
