Next Ombudsman must be decent, brave, fair —Palace

Malacañang said the next Ombudsman must be decent, brave, and fair.

Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Marcos has yet to receive the shortlist for the new Ombudsman.

However, the next official to hold the post must have the key characteristics of a public servant—decent, brave, and fair.

“[S]a kasalukuyan ay wala pa pong natatanggap na shortlist ang Pangulo (As of now, the President has not yet received a shortlist),” Castro said in a Palace briefing on Tuesday, July 8.

“At katulad ng ating sinabi, dapat po isang matino, matapang, fair – iyon po ang mga pangunahin, ilan lamang sa mga pangunahin na dapat na magiging isang katangian hindi lang ng Ombudsman, lahat ng public servants (And as we’ve said, the appointee must be someone who is decent, courageous, and fair—those are just some of the key qualities that should not only define the Ombudsman but all public servants),” she added.

Ombudsman Samuel Martires' term will expire on July 27, 2025.

Last May, the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) announced the opening for application and recommendation to the post.
