CEBU CITY – A policeman died in what authorities described as an accidental firing inside his house in Barangay Buhisan here on Tuesday morning, July 8.
Police Corporal Edmund Danieles Agustin, 33, suffered a bullet wound in the abdomen. He was assigned to the Investigation and Detective Management Unit of the Cebu Provincial Police Office.
Investigation showed that the victim tried to pull his 9mm caliber pistol out of his waist when the gun went off.
He was taken to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center here where he was declared dead.
Police Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, deputy city director for operations of the Cebu City Police Office, said foul play was ruled out in the incident.
Macatangay said a footage of a security camera showed that the policeman was alone in his house when the freak accident happened.
The policeman’s wife was out for an errand while their child was at school at the time of the incident, Macatangay said.
Because of the incident, policemen were reminded to take extra care when handling their service firearms.
Policemen were also encouraged to undergo gun proficiency training, Macatangay said.
