957 Iwahig Prison PDLs finish DepEd's alternative learning system
A total of 957 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm (IPPF) in Palawan are now graduates of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said.
In a statement on Wednesday, July 2, the BuCor said the graduation ceremony for the PDLs was held last June 27.
The BuCor said that 184 PDLs completed the Basic Literacy Program; 206, lower elementary; 221, advanced elementary; and 346, junior high school.
It also said the IPPF’s ALS program achieved an 89 percent passing rate in the recent accreditation and evaluation test conducted by DepEd–Puerto Princesa City -- the highest among all ALS clusters in the city, particularly in the advanced elementary and junior high school levels.
It added that the milestone reflects the continuing commitment of the BuCor and the DepEd to deliver inclusive education, even to those within correctional facilities.
The ALS program serves as a cornerstone in helping PDLs acquire the skills and knowledge needed for reintegration into society as productive citizens, it stressed.
