As technology rapidly advances, many older adults still struggle to keep up. In response to their need to get around more easily, Uber has introduced new senior-focused features in the U.S. and some select cities globally.
The Uber senior account and Simple mode features are designed to make the app more accessible and intuitive for older adults. These senior-focused features are accessed through the user's existing Family Profile feature.
Users will now notice larger texts and easy-to-follow directions, and an optional support for loved ones. Loved ones can request rides and manage payment methods. And for everyone's peace of mind, loved ones can receive real-time trip updates on behalf of their senior family members from their own phones. Family organizers can book rides on behalf of the senior account holder and contact drivers as well.
Of course, some older adults prefer to be independent. Uber's Simple Mode setting can help them with that, providing a simplified interface that requires no Family Profile connection.
While Uber is currently unavailable in the Philippines, its senior-friendly features offer valuable insights and highlight a significant need in the local market.
According to the Commission on Population and Development (Popcom), the Philippines is becoming an aging society, with seniors or those aged 60 and above now making up 8.5% of the population; a figure expected to rise steadily. As the number of seniors continues to grow, it becomes important to develop ways to support their mobility and independence.
Sadly, current transportation options in the country remain a challenge. Public transport is often inaccessible due to crowded conditions, complex routes, and limited accommodations. While ride-hailing apps like Grab and the newly launched Green GSM offer alternatives, they can still be difficult for seniors to use, particularly for those who may be less tech-savvy or require assistance when booking rides.
Local ride-hailing platforms and innovators in our country would do well to take note of Uber's senior-focused features and consider developing and implementing similar solutions so our seniors can be empowered to be independent. Doing so could also ease concerns of family members, particularly those living far away, who want to ensure their elderly loved ones can get around safely. With these features in place, even Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) could conveniently book and monitor rides for their relatives. Ultimately, such efforts could help bridge the digital divide by making transportation technology more accessible and less overwhelming for seniors.
