Over 1,300 board feet of illegally cut lumber have been seized within the prison reserve of the Leyte Regional Prison (LRP), the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said on Thursday, June 26
In a statement, the BuCor said the seizure was a result of a joint patrol conducted last June 18 by the LRP, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
It said that the illegally cut Lauan lumber was recovered in Barangay Mahagna in Abuyog, Leyte and had been turned over for proper disposition to CENRO.
It also said the discovery of the illegal tree cutting activities shows “the ongoing threats to natural resources in the area.”
“This highlights the need for sustained inter-agency enforcement efforts, intensified surveillance, and stronger engagements with local communities to deter environmental violations within the forested areas of LRP,” it added.
