BI arrests 3 Chinese nationals who posed as Filipinos

Three Chinese nationals, who claimed they are Filipinos, have been arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Zamboanga del Sur.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado identified them as Wang Yunpeng, 46; Lin Shaozhang, 34; and Wang Jingcai, 41.
They were arrested last June 16 during an operation conducted by the BI in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Viado said.
At the same time, another Chinese national, who was identified by the BI as Liu Yang, 45, was also arrested for working illegally in a business establishment.
In a statement, the BI said that Wang Yunpeng and Liu Yang were arrested together in Barangay Tikwas in Dumalinao town in Zamboanga del Sur.
“Wang was found to be misrepresenting himself as a Filipino, and was in possession of documentation stating the same. Wang admitted to be operating a coconut charcoal business since 2022, without a proper permits and visa,” the BI said.
It also said that Lin Shaozhang was arrested while managing a shopping center in Molave in Zamboanga del Sur.
“Lin was found to be misrepresenting himself as a Filipino, and even possessed a Philippine driver’s license indicating his nationality as such,” it added.
In the case of Wang Jingcai, the BI said the Chinese national was arrested in a shopping center manning a cellphone shop and who also presented a Philippine driver’s license.
Viado said “the illegal use of Philippine identities remains a problem as foreign nationals are able to acquire authentic Philippine documents despite not being eligible for citizenship.”
He also said that “foreign nationals pretending to be Pinoys might be embedding themselves in the country for espionage, or to do criminal activities.”
