CEBU CITY – Plant lovers, or the so-called “plantitos” and “plantitos,” are in for a huge treat as the Horti Filipina International Plant Show finally unwrapped on Friday, June 20, at the sprawling SM Seaside City here.

The show has brought in close to 50 foreign and local merchants to display their prized collections.
“We have merchants from Thailand, Vietnam, Ecuador, and Japan. Of course, we also have our exhibitors from Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao,” said Tiffany Cham, one of the show’s organizers.
Cham disclosed that it is the first time that Horti Filipina has organized such an event outside Manila.
“We usually do it in Manila. We just concluded our international show in SMX last March and it was there that we discussed the possibility of doing it in Cebu to cater the Visayas and Mindanao regions,” said Cham.
Aside from the plant sales, the show will also feature lectures, workshops, and demonstrations.
The most anticipated part of the exhibit is the plant competition where participants will vie for top honors in six categories.
“The grand prize is P50,000 for the “Best in Show” award,” said Cham.
Being showcased in the show, which will run until Sunday, June 22, are mostly ornamental and indoor plants.
During the opening, mallgoers were able to see up close the captivating Galadriel, considered as the holy grail of house plants.
Cham said the Galadriel displayed in the show is owned by a private collector from Bangkok, Thailand.
The plant, known for its rare circuit-like variegation, elongated mystic, creamy leaves, is worth a staggering $40,000 (roughtly P2.3 million).
“It was flown here from Thailand just for this show. It is the first time that it is displayed in public,” said Cham.
Cham said Horta Filipino welcomed the warm reception of the public when the show opened on Friday afternoon, June 20.
“We are overwhelmed by the response of the people. People kept coming from the time that we opened the show,” Cham said.
